Dr April-Louise Pennant is a Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellow at Cardiff University's School of Social Sciences. Her research focuses on social justice, race, gender, and education systems, particularly centering Black British experiences. She holds a PhD in Education from Cardiff University, supported by an ESRC studentship, and a first-class undergraduate degree in Sociology. Her work bridges academic theory with grassroots community engagement, advocating for inclusive curricula and anti-racist policies.
Key research interests include intersectional barriers faced by Black communities, historical memory, and critical heritage studies. She is a Research Associate at Nelson Mandela University’s CriSHET and an Honorary Research Associate at Bangor University. Awards include the Leverhulme Fellowship and the Welsh Government’s Valuing Diversity Award.
Publications include her 2024 book Babygirl, You've Got This!, exploring Black girls’ and women’s educational journeys, and peer-reviewed articles on topics like pandemic impacts on marginalized communities and Black British identity. She actively participates in community initiatives such as the GW4/National Trust partnership.
