April J. Mayes

April J. Mayes serves as Associate Professor and Chair of the History Department at Pomona College.

Her research specializes in Caribbean historical studies, with concentrated analysis of racial hierarchies, class structures, and national identity formation in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Key contributions include the monograph The Mulatto Republic: Class, Race, and Dominican National Identity and the co-edited volume Transnational Hispaniola: New Directions in Haitian and Dominican Studies (with Kiran Jayaram), which examine transnational and diasporic dimensions of Hispaniola's socio-political landscape.
