April Brown is an Associate Professor in the Department of Television Film & Media Studies within the College of Arts & Letters at California State University, Los Angeles. An award-winning journalist, she transitioned to full-time teaching in 2016 after a distinguished career with PBS NewsHour, BBC, and ITN, covering education, foreign affairs, science, and major international events including Iran’s Green Revolution and the first television interview with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
Her educational background includes:
- Master’s degree in International Broadcast Journalism from Birmingham City University (U.K.)
- B.F.A. from the University of Arizona
Professor Brown specializes in broadcast journalism, investigative reporting, and documentary production, with deep expertise in education reporting, foreign affairs, science and technology communication, health reporting, immigration coverage, and Indigenous issues. She currently produces the documentary "A Boy and His Dream" exploring autism through the lens of automotive obsession, and hosts the podcast "Adjunctitis: A Teaching Podcast" supporting new educators. Her interactive textbook "Introduction to Journalism: An Interactive Guide" serves as a contemporary resource for journalism pedagogy.
Brown’s teaching excellence has been recognized through the "Professor of Influence" honor from a graduating senior and a Certificate in Teaching Practices for Student Engagement and Success from the Association of College and University Educators.
