Anwar Uhuru

Anwar Uhuru is an Assistant Professor in the Department of African American Studies and Philosophy at Wayne State University's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. They are also affiliate faculty in Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies. Their research explores human value through intersecting lenses of race, gender, sexuality, and ableism. Uhuru holds a Ph.D. from St. John's University, an Ed.M. from Columbia University’s Teacher's College, and B.A./M.A. degrees from Marygrove College.

Research interests include Black existentialism, Africana philosophy, and the intersection of disability studies with Crip theory. They analyze performance and aesthetic practices in cultural contexts, such as hip-hop’s role in shaping Black existential narratives. Uhuru’s work bridges philosophy with activism, as seen in their exploration of James Baldwin’s critiques of racialized and gendered bodies.

Teaching spans undergraduate and graduate levels, covering topics like Caribbean politics, feminist philosophy, and special topics in Africana studies. Their forthcoming book, *The Insurrectionist Case for Reparations: Race, Value and Ethics* (SUNY Press), argues for ethical frameworks rooted in anti-racist and anti-capitalist praxis.
