About
Antonis Rokas is a Professor of Evolutionary Biology at Vanderbilt University, where he has served on the faculty for 15 years. During the 2022 sabbatical, he became the first Klaus Tschira Guest Professor at the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS) and later a visiting research fellow at Merton College, University of Oxford. These roles allowed him to engage deeply with computational and experimental aspects of evolutionary biology in Europe.
Research Focus: His work addresses critical challenges in evolutionary biology, particularly in synthesizing large-scale genomic datasets and tackling reproducibility issues in computational biology. Key areas include phylogenomics, comparative genomics, and the intersection of computational methods with evolutionary theory.
Scientific Collaborations & Recognition:
- Collaborated with the Computational Molecular Evolution (CME) group at HITS on reproducibility in computational biology.
- Co-authored a synthesis article on evolutionary biology challenges with Alexandros Stamatakis.
- Delivered a colloquium talk on 'Incongruence in the Tree of Life' at HITS.
Awards:
- Klaus Tschira Guest Professorship at HITS (2022).
Rokas emphasizes the importance of international collaboration and the value of funding mechanisms that prioritize investing in people over projects. His seven-month European sabbatical marked his first extended period outside the United States since leaving his academic base in Nashville.
