Antonio Coco

Dr. Antonio Coco is a Senior Lecturer at the Essex Law School, affiliated with the University of Essex since January 2020. He holds a PhD in Law (University of Geneva, summa cum laude, 2019), an LL.M. in International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights (Geneva Academy, summa cum laude, 2012), and a Master’s Degree in Law (University of Catania, summa cum laude, 2010).

Research Interests focus on Public International Law, International Criminal Law, International Humanitarian Law, and International Law applicable to Information and Communication Technologies. His work has been widely cited by institutions such as the International Criminal Court and the UN International Law Commission's Special Rapporteur on Crimes Against Humanity.

• Member, Expert Group on 'Mens Rea' for the project 'Rethinking Secondary Liability for International Crimes' (University of Amsterdam)
• Member, Sino-European Working Group on Application of International Law to Cyberspace

Scientific Awards include the prestigious Doc.Mobility fellowship from the Swiss National Science Foundation (2016–2017) and serving as the University of Oxford's delegate to the UN Open-Ended Working Group on Cybersecurity (2019).

Advising includes supervising PhD candidates such as Sebastian Schnorrenberg and Abdulmalik Mohammed A Aldawish. His grants include funding from the Modern Law Review for research on international law-making for ICTs (2023).
