About
Professor Anthony Kucernak is a Professor of Physical Chemistry at Imperial College London’s Department of Chemistry, within the Faculty of Natural Sciences. He leads the Kucernak Group, a research team focused on electrochemical interfaces, electrocatalysts, and energy systems like fuel cells, electrolyzers, and redox flow batteries. His roles include leading the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Supergen Hub (£4M) and former Deputy Director of the Energy Futures Lab (2014-2019).
Research Interests: His work bridges fundamental electrochemistry with applied energy technologies, emphasizing renewable power systems, catalysis, and materials engineering. Key areas include non-precious electrocatalysts, PEM fuel cells, and novel diagnostic techniques for clean energy devices.
Grants & Consortia: PI on multiple EPSRC grants (e.g., £3M UK international collaborations), Co-I on EU FP7/H2020 projects (e.g., FURTHER-FC, CRESCENDO), and InnovateUK-funded initiatives. He has secured over £11M in funding over the last decade.
- Scientific Contributions: 12 licensed patents, 4 startup co-foundings, and extensive industry consulting.
- Awards: FAPESP São Paulo Excellence Chair (2022-2026).
Labs & Teams: Affiliated with the Molecular Sciences Research Hub, Energy Futures Lab, and the Institute for Molecular Science and Engineering (IMSE). The Kucernak Group collaborates globally, hosting visiting researchers from institutions like PSI, KTH, and Nissan.
