Anthony King, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at The Ohio State University, holding the Anne K. “Nancy” Jeffrey Endowed Professorship for Mental Health Equity and Resilience. He serves as Director of the Program for Resilience and co-Chair of the ENIGMA-Meditation Working Group. His work focuses on neurobiological mechanisms of psychotherapies, particularly for PTSD and depression, with a focus on mindfulness-based interventions, psychedelic-assisted therapies, and stress-related disorders. Dr. King uses neuroimaging (fMRI, EEG), epigenetic tools, and large-scale data analysis to study resilience and trauma effects on brain structure/function.
Education includes MS in Clinical Psychology (Rutgers University), PhDs in Molecular and Integrative Physiology (University of Michigan) and Clinical Psychology (Fielding Graduate University), with APA-accredited training. He leads the State of Ohio Adversity and Resilience (SOAR) Study, examining risk/resilience in mental health across lifespans. His research is funded by NIMH, NCCIH, and DoD, resulting in over 60 peer-reviewed publications.
Key areas include:
- Neural mechanisms of PTSD treatments
- Cultural neuroscience of emotional processing
- Epigenetic markers of trauma (DNA methylation)
- Psychedelic-assisted therapy for depression
- Impact of childhood adversity on brain systems
He collaborates internationally through ENIGMA consortia and investigates resilience-building interventions for marginalized communities, including Asian Americans facing racism during the pandemic. His work bridges basic neuroscience with clinical applications, emphasizing accessible, neuroscience-informed mental health care.
