Dr. Anthony Joseph is a Lecturer in Creative Writing at King’s College London’s Department of English, within the Faculty of Arts & Humanities. He holds a PhD in Creative Writing from Goldsmiths College and has taught at Birkbeck College, Goldsmiths, and the University of Liverpool, including a tenure as the Colm Tóibín Fellow in Creative Writing. His work bridges literature, music, and interdisciplinary art, focusing on liminality, Caribbean postcolonial narratives, and experimental poetry. He has published four poetry collections and three novels, including Kitch: A Fictional Biography of a Calypso Icon (2018) and Sonnets for Albert (2022), which won the T.S. Eliot Prize. His music career includes eight albums and awards like the Paul Hamblyn Foundation Composers Award (2020).
Research interests include the intersection of music and poetics, black British and Caribbean postcolonial literature, and life writing. He has curated major cultural events like the Windrush Celebration at the EFG London Jazz Festival (2018) and the Manchester Poetry Library’s Poetry on Vinyl Collection (2021). Awards include the Jerwood Compton Poetry Fellowship (2019) and fellowships with the British Council in California.
Recent activities include a 2025 retrospective performance at Philharmonie de Paris titled The Caribbean is Everywhere and judging the Cosmo Davenport-Hines Poetry Prize. He remains active in academic and public spheres through lectures, residencies, and panel discussions.
