About
Dr. Anthony Fitzpatrick serves as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry and Forensic Science at Nottingham Trent University's School of Science & Technology. He acts as Forensic Science Admissions Tutor and Module Leader for Forensic Chemistry (CHEM10033) and BSc Project Module (FORE30003), teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programs including Foundation Chemistry, Forensic Analysis, and Drugs of Abuse.
His academic foundation includes a First Class Honours BSc (2011) and PhD (2015) from University College Dublin, where his doctoral research explored "Modulation of the Magnetic Anisotropy and the Jahn-Teller Distortion in Manganese(III)" under Dr. Grace Morgan. Following postdoctoral work at UCD, he joined NTU in 2017, transitioned to Sheffield Hallam University in 2020, and returned to NTU as Senior Lecturer in 2021.
Research centers on inorganic-materials-forensic chemistry interfaces, with current projects developing:
- Soft luminescent materials for security features
- Molecular switches for illicit substance detection
- Smart fingerprint powders for forensic analysis
- Chemosensors for explosive identification
Publications (2017-2025) reveal consistent focus on magnetic properties, luminescent materials, and bioinorganic applications of metal complexes, particularly exploring Jahn-Teller distortions, spin-state switching, and structure-property relationships in security/forensic contexts.
Professional recognition includes:
- Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA)
He actively supervises PhD candidates, currently serving as primary supervisor for Annie Prasad and co-supervisor for Dhanushiyaa Sivarajah, following successful co-supervision of Dr. Elizabeth Rusbridge's 2024 thesis on "Synthesis and properties of advanced chiral and racemic multifunctional molecular materials".
As a core member of NTU's Imaging, Materials and Engineering Centre (IMEC), he collaborates across disciplines while maintaining external engagements with the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC), Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences (MCSFS), and European Magnetism Association (EMA).
