Anthony Finkelstein

Sir Anthony Finkelstein is a Professor of Software Systems Engineering at University College London (UCL) and currently serves as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences and Senior Dean of the School of Engineering, Mathematics, Physical Sciences & the Built Environment (BEAMS). He holds visiting professorships at Imperial College London and the National Institute for Informatics, Tokyo, Japan. His roles include membership on the Council of the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and leadership in national research assessment panels.

• Education/Experience: Post-doctoral research at Imperial College London (1985–1988), Lecturer at Imperial College (1988–1994), Professor at City University London (1994–1997), and Head of UCL’s Computer Science Department (2002–2010).

His research focuses on enterprise computing systems, software systems engineering, systems biology, and large-scale system modeling. He has secured over £30m in research funding and established three successful spin-out companies. Notable contributions include pioneering work in requirements engineering and traceability, recognized by awards such as the ICSE Most Influential Paper and the Oliver Lodge Medal.

• Awards: Knight Bachelor (2022), Royal Academy of Engineering Fellowship, IEEE/ACM Service Awards, and multiple paper prizes.

He has advised numerous companies and government bodies, served on editorial boards (e.g., ACM TOSEM, IEEE TSE), and contributed to science policy as a Chief Scientific Adviser. His commitment to education includes organizing international student events and leading City St George's, a University of London institution.
