The University of ManchesterAbout
Anthony Day is a Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Manchester, affiliated with the Wellcome Trust Centre for Cell-Matrix Research and the Lydia Becker Institute of Immunology and Inflammation. He leads the translation efforts in the Cell-Matrix Research Centre and holds roles in international scientific societies such as President of the International Society for Hyaluronan Sciences. His research focuses on glycosaminoglycan-protein interactions in inflammation and ovulation, particularly investigating hyaluronan (HA) and TSG-6’s role in arthritis, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and matrix organization.
Education: BA in Chemistry (Oxford, 1985), DPhil in Biochemistry (Oxford, 1988). Career: Research Fellow at Oxford (1988-1998), MRC Senior Scientific Staff (1998-2005), current role at Manchester since 2005. Funding: Supported by BBSRC, Fight for Sight, Versus Arthritis, and Wellcome Trust. Awards: Elected to the Academy of Europe (2012).
Research highlights include defining the Y402H CFH polymorphism’s role in AMD, elucidating TSG-6’s anti-inflammatory properties, and developing TSG-6-based therapies for musculoskeletal disorders. His work bridges structural biochemistry with clinical applications, targeting conditions like osteoarthritis and retinal degeneration.
Key collaborations include studies on hyaluronan’s role in lung disease (e.g., COVID-19), matrix crosslinking via PTX3, and novel drug delivery systems for TSG-6. His >180 publications (H-index 68) reflect interdisciplinary approaches to understanding extracellular matrix biology and disease mechanisms.
