Dr. Anthony C. Diala is an Associate Professor of Law at the University of the Western Cape and Founding Director of its Centre for Legal Integration in Africa. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Cape Town (2016), an LLM in Human Rights from the University of Pretoria (2007), and degrees from Nigerian institutions. With over 20 years of experience across 19 countries, he has served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Cape Town, Head of Jurisprudence and International Law at Madonna University (Nigeria), and legal assistant at international tribunals. His research focuses on legal pluralism, comparative law, and human rights, emphasizing the integration of customary laws with modern legal frameworks in Africa.

Research Interests: Dr. Diala explores the interplay between customary legal systems and globalized human rights frameworks in Africa. He advocates for constructive law reforms that harmonize indigenous norms with modern values, addressing dissonances arising from colonial legacies and globalization. His work critiques rigid judicial approaches to customary laws and proposes adaptive legal integration strategies.
Grants & Affiliations: His research has been supported by institutions such as the American Council of Learned Societies and the German Academic Exchange Service. He serves as a Visiting Professor at the University of Turin, editorial board member of Legal Pluralism and Critical Social Analysis, and advisor to South Africa’s Law Reform Commission on matrimonial property issues.
Labs & Initiatives: He leads the Centre for Legal Integration in Africa, which focuses on practical and theoretical solutions for legal pluralism challenges in sub-Saharan Africa.
