Annette Patricia Lareau

Annette Patricia Lareau is the Stanley I. Sheerr Professor and Edmund J. and Louise W. Kahn Professor in the Social Sciences in the Department of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts and Sciences. A leading sociologist of education and family life, she has made significant contributions to understanding how social class shapes parenting practices and educational experiences. Previously, she held faculty positions at Temple University (1990-2005), the University of Maryland, College Park, and Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, and was a resident scholar at the Center for Advanced Study of Behavioral Sciences during 2005-2006.

Lareau earned her B.A. in sociology from UC Santa Cruz in 1974, followed by her M.A. (1978) and Ph.D. (1984) in sociology from UC Berkeley. Her research focuses on family-school relationships, the cultural logic of child rearing, and how residential decisions affect educational opportunities. She is best known for developing the influential concept of ‘concerted cultivation’ to describe middle-class parenting approaches that actively foster children’s talents through organized activities and direct intervention in institutions.

Lareau’s publication record shows sustained scholarly impact, with her most recent work continuing to explore class, race, and educational inequality.
