Annette Dorgerloh is a Private Lecturer (Privatdozentin) at the Institute for Art and Visual History, Humboldt University of Berlin. She has held various research and teaching positions since 1987, including roles at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR, the Researcher Integration Program (WIP), and multiple collaborative projects funded by the DFG and VolkswagenStiftung. Her research spans art history, film studies, garden history, and cultural memory.
Education:
- 1982–1987: Studied art history, classical archaeology, and cultural theory at Humboldt University of Berlin
- 1987: Diploma thesis on “The Reflection of the French Revolution in Contemporary German Almanac and Magazine Graphics”
- 1996: PhD on “Masks of Humanity: The Artist Couple Sabine and Reinhold Lepsius – Studies in Berlin Portrait Painting around 1900”
- 2008: Habilitation with the thesis “Strategies of Enduring: The Grave and Memorial in the Early German Landscape Garden”
Research Interests:
Her scholarly work is rooted in interdisciplinary approaches to art history, with a focus on 17th–20th century European art, gender constructions, artist myths, and visual culture. She has made significant contributions to the history of garden art, exploring how landscapes and memorials intersect with identity, memory, and power. Her recent work also delves into film scenography, particularly the representation of antiquity and ideology in German cinema.

Publications and Editorial Work:
She is the author or editor of more than a dozen books and over 100 scholarly articles and exhibition catalogues. Her monographs include Strategien des Überdauerns (2012), and she has co-edited volumes such as Preußen aus Celluloid (2012) and Vom Handlungsraum zum Filmbild (2020). She has also served as co-editor of the journal kritische berichte.
