Dr. Annette Breckwoldt serves as Programme Area Lead (Ocean Literacy, Equity and Leadership) and Senior Scientist at the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) in Bremen, Germany. She concurrently holds roles as ZMT's Women's and Equal Opportunities Representative since 2019 and Scientific Council member since 2021.
Her research centers on marine social sciences with emphasis on science-stakeholder interactions, reef passages, integrated coastal management, and small-scale fisheries. She specializes in environmental realities in small island states and inter/transdisciplinary approaches bridging ecology, social sciences, and human geography. Her work consistently addresses local marine resource governance and environmental perceptions in vulnerable communities.
Recent publications demonstrate strong alignment with marine conservation policy, particularly reef fish monitoring technologies and integrating small-scale fisheries into marine protected areas for the '30x30' biodiversity target. Her scholarly output shows consistent focus on practical applications for coastal sustainability.
Dr. Breckwoldt actively leads multiple international research initiatives including SOCPacific, PASSES, MOOBYF, and INDIFUN-AI projects. She holds significant organizational leadership as Vice-Chair of the IGU Commission on Islands and Co-Chair of IMBER's Human Dimension Working Group, while contributing to the PACPATH Project under the Belmont Forum.
