Professor Anne Murphy serves as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) at the University of Portsmouth, overseeing strategic educational leadership and student experience. Previously, she was Executive Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences (2021–2023) and Dean of the School of Humanities at the University of Hertfordshire. Her career began in financial derivatives trading before transitioning to academia.
Her research expertise centers on early modern financial markets, 18th-century Bank of England operations, and the interplay between economic, social, and political history. Notable works include Virtuous Bankers (2023) and The Origins of English Financial Markets (2009), which earned the Economic History Society’s monograph prize. She has also explored gender dynamics in financial history, such as women’s roles as investors during Britain’s financial revolution.
