Dr. Anne M. Comi is a Professor of Neurology and Developmental Medicine at Kennedy Krieger Institute and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where she serves as Director of the Hunter Nelson Sturge-Weber Center. She is a leading expert in the diagnosis and treatment of Sturge-Weber Syndrome and related capillary malformation disorders.
Dr. Comi received her medical degree from SUNY Buffalo School of Medicine, completed her pediatrics residency at Children's Hospital of Buffalo, and finished her pediatric neurology training at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Her research focuses on understanding the neurological complications of Sturge-Weber Syndrome, with particular emphasis on:
- The pathologic processes involved in SWS neurological complications
- The effects of chronic hypoxia and glucose deprivation on brain tissue
- The interactions between seizures and impaired blood flow in the brain
- The somatic mutation in GNAQ causing SWS and port-wine birthmarks
Dr. Comi is actively involved in both clinical and laboratory research aimed at developing novel treatment approaches for Sturge-Weber Syndrome. She regularly presents her findings at national conferences and has been instrumental in advancing understanding of this rare condition.
As a clinician, Dr. Comi provides specialized care for patients with Sturge-Weber Syndrome through the Hunter Nelson Sturge-Weber Center. She is a physician advisor for the Vascular Birthmark Foundation and Sturge-Weber Syndrome Community, and has served on the scientific advisory board of the Sturge-Weber Foundation.
Dr. Comi is a member of the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (IMLCC), allowing her to provide telehealth services to Sturge-Weber patients in Nevada, Tennessee, and Minnesota.
The Hunter Nelson Sturge-Weber Center, under Dr. Comi's leadership, hosts an annual Sturge-Weber Syndrome Virtual Family Conference, bringing together patients, families, and medical experts to share knowledge and advance care for this rare condition.
