About
Anne M Gothmann is an Associate Professor of Environmental Studies and Physics at St. Olaf College, where she directs New Faculty Mentoring and serves as Interim Director of Engineering Studies (2025). Her research focuses on paleoclimate science and earth system dynamics, using geochemical signatures in fossil coral skeletons to reconstruct past ocean temperatures, circulation, and sea level. She emphasizes diversity and global engagement in climate science.
- Departments: Environmental Studies, Physics
- Projects: Coral preservation analysis, uranium incorporation in sediments, live coral culturing systems
- Collaborations: Carleton College (ICP-MS), Friday Harbor Labs (aquarium experiments)
Her lab employs Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray Diffractometry, and isotope analysis, with involvement of undergraduate researchers like Huy Nguyen '21 and Henry Henson '20. She has published extensively on coral biomineralization and paleoenvironmental proxies since 2013.
