Anne Lair

Anne Lair is Professor (Lecturer) in the Department of World Languages and Cultures at the University of Utah, where she has served in progressively senior lecturer roles since 2012. She earned her PhD in French and Italian from The Ohio State University in 2003 and is fluent in both English and French. In addition to her academic duties, she holds the honorary title of Honorary Consul of France and is active in the French-American Business Council.

Her teaching portfolio spans a broad range of French language and culture courses including Intensive French Grammar, Intermediate French I & II, French Cultural Studies, Business French, Special Topics, and Graduate Language Study. These offerings reflect her dedication to both foundational language instruction and advanced cultural and professional French studies.

Professor Lair’s scholarly and pedagogical contributions have been recognized by multiple national and international awards. She was knighted in the Order of the Palmes Académiques by the French Ministry of Education in 2017 and received the Dorothy Ludwig Excellence in Teaching Award from the American Association of Teachers of French in 2020. Earlier distinctions include the Teacher of the Year Award at the Post-Secondary Level (Utah Foreign Language Association, 2014) and the ACTFL/Nelson Brooks Award for the Teaching of Culture (2012).

In terms of service and outreach, Professor Lair serves as the Honorary Consul of France, facilitating diplomatic and cultural relations between France and the local community, and participates actively in the French-American Business Council to foster transatlantic economic and educational partnerships.
