Dr. Anne Engelst Nørgaard is an Associate Professor and Deputy Head of Research at the Department of Historical and Classical Studies, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Faculty of Humanities. She specializes in the political culture, participation, and rhetoric of 19th-century Europe, with a focus on Danish and Norwegian contexts. Her research examines democracy as a concept and practice, particularly in the Danish peasant movement (1830–1870) and early petitioning systems.
Education: Ph.D. in History from Aarhus University (2017), followed by postdoctoral research at Aarhus University and Leiden University. She has held visiting positions at the University of Bielefeld and the University of Jyväskylä (as a visiting professor in the Academy of Finland project).
Research Projects:
- Leading the Norwegian Research Council-funded project "Petitions and Petitioning in the Nascent Democracy: Norway in the Long 19th Century" (2024–2028).
- Participant in NTNU's Outstanding Academic Fellow Programme (2024–2028).
- Collaboration with the University of Jyväskylä on "Political Representation - Tensions between Parliament and the People" (2021–2026).
