Anne E. Porter

Anne E. Porter serves as an Assistant Professor (Fixed Term) in the Department of Writing, Rhetoric, and Cultures at Michigan State University (MSU). She previously held roles as Writing Center Director and Director of Composition at Alma College, and as Writing Specialist at Providence College. Her teaching experience spans courses in writing, rhetoric, and first-year seminars.

Porter earned a doctorate in English and Education from the University of Michigan, alongside master’s degrees in Counseling Psychology and Comparative Literature. Her research focuses on civic writing, agency development through writing tasks, assessment methodologies, and the sociocultural impacts of writing practices on student identities.

Her professional background includes work in social service organizations, bridging her academic expertise with community-oriented practices. She actively supports student writers and faculty in enhancing writing instruction through her administrative and pedagogical roles.
