Anne Balay

Anne Balay is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Haverford College. A multidisciplinary scholar and activist, she has worked as a car mechanic, English professor, and truck driver. Her research focuses on marginalized queer communities, blending academic inquiry with social justice advocacy.

Current projects include Sex, Trucks, and Redneck Women, an oral history initiative examining sexual experiences and gender identity among truckers. Her book Steel Closets: Voices of Gay, Lesbian, and Transgender Steelworkers received critical acclaim, earning awards from Lambda Literary and the National Women's Studies Association.
