Dr. Annabel de Frece is a Senior Lecturer in Sustainable Development and Deputy Dean (Teaching and Learning) at SOAS University of London. She holds dual affiliations within the Department of Development Studies and the College of Development, Economics and Finance. Her academic background spans social and natural sciences, with a focus on human-environment interactions, resource governance, and sustainable development in West Africa, Latin America, and beyond.
Dr. de Frece holds a BA (Hons) from SOAS, an MSc from Imperial College London, and a PhD from Imperial College. She previously held roles at institutions including the Centre for Food Policy (City University) and the Institute for the Study of the Americas (UoL). She leads the Interdisciplinary Food Systems Teaching and Learning (IFSTAL) programme as SOAS PI and convenes the MSc Sustainable Development programme.
Her research interests include political ecology, gender equality, and education for sustainable development. She emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to food systems pedagogy and has conducted fieldwork in Ghana, Mexico, Indonesia, and Uganda. Dr. de Frece actively publishes on sustainable food systems, policy equity, and transformative education models.
