Anna McDonald

Dr Anna McDonald is a Lecturer in Violin and Artist-in-Residence at the Australian National University School of Music, where she also serves as Ensembles Convenor. Her career spans performance, composition, and research in intercultural music practices.

• PhD (ANU) focusing on transition from baroque violin to Iranian kamancheh
• Bachelor of Music (Canberra School of Music) with high distinction
• Advanced Solo Studies (Guildhall School of Music and Drama)

Her research explores identity in music-making through intercultural psychology and lived-experience narratives, bridging Western and Middle Eastern traditions. She specializes in Middle Eastern modes, baroque ornamentation, and modal music composition, with cultural studies rooted in Mithraism, Zoroastrianism, and Islam.

Dr McDonald has received the Friends’ Prize for outstanding graduate and consecutive full Australia Council scholarships. She has performed with ensembles like the Gabrieli Consort, Hanover Band, and Madakto Orchestra, and co-founded the Jazmourian Ensemble.
