Anna Maria Di Tolla is a full Professor of Berber/Amazigh Studies at the University of Naples L'Orientale, where she teaches courses on Amazigh language and the Contemporary History of Berber North Africa. She serves as Director of the "Serie Studi Africanistici. Studi berberi e libico-berberi" and President of the "Centro di studi berberi/amazigh." Her academic work bridges multiple institutions through her Erasmus mobility activities and international collaborations.
Professor Di Tolla's research focuses on Amazigh studies across multiple dimensions: language (both oral and written), literary anthropology, Ibadi studies, and contemporary North African issues. Her fieldwork approach involves consistent presence in North African countries, providing authentic insights into Amazigh communities. She has developed a three-year language curriculum for Amazigh/Berber language teaching, focusing on the Nefusi variety (Libya) with a workshop on Tachelhit (Morocco).
Her recent publications (2023-2024) reveal a strong focus on linguistic interference, cultural resilience, Amazigh resistance poetry, and documentation of Libyan Amazigh dialects. These works demonstrate her commitment to preserving and analyzing Amazigh linguistic and cultural heritage while addressing contemporary challenges.
Among her scientific recognitions are the LIFELONG LEARNING PROGRAMME ERASMUS TEACHING scholarship for Project BATTUTA (2017) and the FABBR ANVUR award (2017). She serves on international committees including the Journal of Amazigh Studies (USA), Ussnan-Bejaïa (Algeria), Asinag IRCAM (Morocco), and Études et Documents Berbères (Paris).
Professor Di Tolla has secured significant research funding including the FFABR research fund and RSA 2002-2019 funding. She has coordinated national and international research projects (PRIN, PRA, Fonds Roux MMSH/IREMAM, Battuta, EHESS, CNRS) and has served as coordinator of a Master's degree program, member of the Quality Presidium, and currently serves on the Faculty Board of the Doctoral Program "Asia, Africa and Mediterranean" and the Erasmus Mobility and Traineeship Commission.
