Dr. Anna M. Gade is the Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor of Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin—Madison, affiliated with the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies. She chairs the Undergraduate Committee for the Environmental Studies major and holds affiliations with the Center for Culture, History and Environment (CHE), the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS), and the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures. Her academic journey includes degrees from Swarthmore College (B.A. Mathematics), and The University of Chicago (M.A. and Ph.D. in History of Religions). She has taught at Cornell University, Princeton University, Oberlin College, and others.
Her research bridges environmental humanities, Islamic environmental ethics, and Southeast Asian studies, with a focus on cultural, historical, and religious responses to environmental change. Recent work addresses Islamic environmental justice, Rights of Nature in the Asia-Pacific, and interdisciplinary environmental ethics. She authored *Muslim Environmentalisms: Religious and Social Foundations* (2019) and co-edited volumes like *Islam Through Objects* (2021). Current projects explore infrastructure, urban futures, and environmental ethics.
Professor Gade’s teaching spans courses in Environmental Humanities, Islamic Studies, and Religious Ethics. She has held leadership roles in the American Academy of Religion’s Qur'an Group and contributed to over 20 book chapters and edited volumes. Her research has been supported by extensive fieldwork in Indonesia, Cambodia, and Malaysia.
