Anna Henderson

Dr. Anna Henderson is a Senior Teaching Associate in Film Practice at the School of Arts, Lancaster University. She is an independent researcher and filmmaker with expertise in film adaptation, screenwriting, and feminist film studies.

Her educational background includes a Master's degree in Screenwriting from Edinburgh Napier University and a PhD in Film from Lancaster Institute of Contemporary Arts at Lancaster University, successfully defended in September 2023. Her doctoral research explored film adaptation across historical, national, and gender borders through an interdisciplinary approach combining Film Studies, Russian Studies, Adaptation Studies, and Creative Writing.

Dr. Henderson's research focuses on film practice, screenwriting, intercultural screen adaptation, and female characters, particularly examining how Dostoevsky's literary works are adapted across different cultural contexts. Her work addresses themes of social inequality, freedom of religion, freedom of education, and gender representation in film adaptations. She has produced practice-based research including the short film "Transgressing" which demonstrates how Dostoevsky's novel resonates with contemporary audiences.

Her scholarly output demonstrates consistent focus on Russian literature adaptations in world cinema, with particular attention to the character of Sonia Marmeladova from Crime and Punishment across different cinematic interpretations.

Dr. Henderson teaches courses including Film Theory, European New Wave Cinema, Documentary Film Practice, and Introduction to Film Studies. She is developing a feature film "The Punishment" as a sequel to her PhD research short film "Transgressing." Additionally, she serves as one of the directors for The Bay International Film Festival in Morecambe and works as a screenwriter under the alias Enni Red with credits in film and TV in both Russia and the UK.
