Anna G Creadick serves as Professor of English and Creative Writing at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, holding the distinguished George E. Paulsen '49 Professorship. She joined the faculty in 2001 and has established herself as a leading scholar in American literary and cultural studies with particular expertise in post-World War II American culture and literature.
Dr. Creadick earned her Ph.D. in English/American Studies from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (2002), an M.A. in American Studies from Boston College (1994), and a B.S. in English and Education from Appalachian State University (1991). Her academic journey reflects her interdisciplinary commitment to understanding American literature through cultural and historical frameworks.
Her research focuses on Twentieth-Century American Fiction, Southern and Appalachian Studies, American Studies/Cultural Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, the Post-World War II era (1940s-1970s), and Cultural Theory and Popular Culture. Dr. Creadick approaches literary texts through an interdisciplinary and historicist lens, examining literature as both culture and history. She is particularly interested in the power relationships embedded in reading and writing practices, as well as within the texts themselves.
Dr. Creadick's scholarly work reveals consistent themes across her publications, with particular attention to representations of normality, regional identity (especially Appalachian), gender constructions, and the cultural significance of mid-20th century American literature. Her book Perfectly Average: The Pursuit of Normality in Postwar America (2010) has been widely recognized for its insightful analysis of postwar American cultural ideals and has been reviewed in Choice, American Literary History, and the Journal of American History.
