About
Anna Costa is a Research Assistant Professor at the Water and Environmental Research Center (WERC), University of Alaska Fairbanks. Her expertise focuses on hydrology and fluvial geomorphology, with a particular emphasis on climate change impacts on water and sediment fluxes across catchment scales. She combines field observations with stochastic weather modeling and spatially distributed hydrological simulations.
Education:
- Ph.D. (2018): Hydrology and Water Resources Management, ETH Zurich (Switzerland)
- Master of Advanced Studies (2012): Sustainable Water Resources, ETH Zurich
- M.Sc. (2006): Environmental Engineering, University of Trento (Italy)
Research Interests: Anna investigates how climate change and anthropogenic activities influence catchment hydrology and sediment dynamics. Her work integrates field data with advanced modeling techniques, including stochastic weather generation, hydraulic modeling for river restoration, and sediment connectivity analysis. She explores extreme climatic events’ propagation into catchment responses and evaluates flood hazards under future climate scenarios.
Teaching & Outreach: Anna has extensive teaching experience at ETH Zurich, covering watershed modeling, water resources management, and fluvial systems. She has also led outreach programs for schools and the public on topics like Arctic climate change and sustainable water resources.
Advising & Labs: She co-supervised multiple M.Sc. theses on climate change impacts, sediment dynamics, and hydrological modeling in basins across Europe, Asia, and Nepal. Her work is affiliated with WERC, focusing on interdisciplinary environmental research.
