Dr. Ann Fitz-Gerald is Director of the Balsillie School of International Affairs and a Professor in Political Science at Wilfrid Laurier University’s Faculty of Arts. She also serves as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Waterloo. With a background that includes being the first civilian female graduate of the Royal Military College of Canada, she holds advanced degrees from Queen’s University and a UK PhD.
Her research expertise spans:
- Global and national security policy design
- Security sector governance and reform
- Conflict resolution mechanisms
- Military operations in fragile states
- African and South American political dynamics
She has received significant recognition including:
- Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012)

She leads international security initiatives across 13+ countries, has facilitated AU-mediated peace talks, and holds advisory roles with the UK government and UN. As Director of the Balsillie School, she spearheads the Technology Governance Initiative.
