About
Anja Böckmann is a CNRS Research Director (DR1) and Principal Investigator at the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Structural Biochemistry (MMSB UMR 5086 CNRS/University Lyon 1, France). She leads the Protein Solid-State NMR group and has held various leadership roles in European magnetic resonance societies.
- Education: PhD in Chemistry (Université Paris XI Orsay, 1996), Diplom (Master) in Chemistry (TU Berlin, 1993), Vordiplom (Bachelor) in Chemistry (1989)
Her research focuses on structural biology using NMR spectroscopy, particularly studying viral membrane proteins (HBV, SARS-CoV-2), amyloid fibrils (A-β, α-synuclein), and molecular machines (DnaB helicase). She has pioneered solid-state NMR techniques for structural analysis.
Key trends in her 138+ publications include: structural characterization of viral capsids and envelope proteins, amyloid protein dynamics, and technical advancements in NMR methodologies for large protein assemblies. She has been recognized with prestigious awards such as the CNRS Bronze Medal and the Impulscience® Award.
- Scientific Awards
- 1986: Fonds der Chemischen Industrie Award
- 2007: CNRS Bronze Medal
- 2014: Prix Pierre Desnuelle (French Académie des Sciences)
- 2024: Impulscience® Award (Fondation Bettencourt-Schueller)
Böckmann has supervised 8 PhD students, 8 Master's students, and 6 postdoctoral fellows. She has held editorial roles (e.g., Associate Editor for Frontiers in Structural Biology) and served on numerous grant evaluation committees, including for ANRS and ANR.
Her laboratory at MMSB collaborates internationally (ETH Zurich, Columbia University) and specializes in integrating solid-state NMR with complementary structural techniques to study disease-relevant protein systems.
