University of Maryland, BaltimoreAbout
Anindo Roy is an Associate Professor of Neurology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, with concurrent appointments as Core Director, Robotics & Engineering at the VA RR&D Maryland Exercise and Robotics Center of Excellence (MERCE) and faculty at the University of Maryland, College Park in the Maryland Robotics Center and Office of Advanced Engineering Education.
- Doctorate in Engineering Science and Systems (University of Arkansas at Little Rock, 2005)
- Postdoctoral training in Neuromechanics (Georgia Tech/Emory, 2006) and Rehabilitation Robotics (MIT, 2009)
Roy's research focuses on rehabilitation robotics for mobility restoration in stroke survivors and individuals with neurological injuries. Key innovations include: the ABOT ankle exoskeleton with impedance-controlled therapy for foot drop correction; deficit-adjusted adaptive control systems for gait training; and IVET tele-rehabilitation platforms for home-based therapy dissemination. His work bridges biomechanics, motor learning theory, and clinical translation through collaborations with VA RR&D and NIH.
Recent publications highlight clinical trials of adaptive co-robotics showing 85% AFO discard rates post-therapy and cardiometabolic benefits in chronic stroke. Roy's team has developed EEG-integrated reward systems to accelerate neural adaptation and is advancing low-cost portable ABOT systems for post-clinic rehabilitation.
Scientific Awards:
- Abell Foundation Top Innovation Award (2015)
Roy mentors STEM students, postdoctoral scholars, and medical trainees, blending hands-on robotics instruction with goal-driven research training. He teaches graduate courses in Rehabilitation Robotics and Control System Design at the University of Maryland.
