About
Anil K. Chopra is Chancellor's Professor Emeritus in Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC Berkeley. A pioneer in earthquake engineering, his research develops computational methods for seismic safety evaluation of structures including buildings, dams, and nuclear plants.
Key Contributions:
- Developed EAGD/EACD software for dam-water-foundation interaction analysis
- Authored seminal textbook Dynamics of Structures (translated into 7 languages)
- Pioneered methods for ground motion selection in nonlinear structural analysis
Honors: 4-time Norman Medal recipient; National Academy of Engineering member; Housner Medal; Berkeley Citation. Listed among '60 most influential people in hydropower' (2009).
Current Research: Viscous damping models; seismic demand hazard curves; spatial ground motion effects on arch dams.
