Angus Phillips

Professor Angus Phillips is Director of the Oxford International Centre for Publishing at Oxford Brookes University’s School of Arts. He previously ran a trade and reference list at Oxford University Press and now consults for the publishing industry and speaks at international conferences.

Research Interests

Professor Phillips focuses on the evolving landscape of publishing in the digital age. His work explores digital publishing, the international publishing industry, and the economic history of publishing. He has a particular interest in book covers and design and the growth of publishing in China. His research is both theoretical and applied, often addressing the strategic and cultural implications of technological change.

He is an active member of the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Action IS1404 on the evolution of reading in the digital age, and has convened the international "By the Book" publishing studies conference in Florence from 2014 to 2017.

Publications

His recent scholarly output reflects a deep engagement with the future of the book and the monograph, including titles such as Inside Book Publishing (with Giles Clark), The Oxford Handbook of Publishing (with Michael Bhaskar), and Turning the Page. A forthcoming book, Is This a Book? (with Miha Kovač), continues this inquiry into the nature and future of the book form.

Teaching and Supervision

Professor Phillips teaches on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses including the MA in Publishing Media, BA in Media, Journalism and Publishing, and supervises PhD students. He welcomes PhD enquiries and regularly examines doctoral theses at other institutions.
