Professor Angi Porter joined American University Washington College of Law in 2022, teaching Torts, Higher Education Law, and Africana Legal Studies. She holds a J.D. from Howard University School of Law where she served as Editor-in-Chief of the Howard Law Journal, and a B.A. in Communications and Africana Studies from Howard University.
Her research pioneers Africana Legal Studies, applying Africana Studies methodology to legal scholarship. This innovative approach examines continental and diasporic African governance traditions that persisted despite colonial legal impositions.
Prior to academia, Porter practiced civil litigation at Dorsey & Whitney LLP and investigated discrimination cases at the University of Minnesota's Office of Equal Opportunity. She clerked for Judge Michael J. Davis of the U.S. District Court of Minnesota and served as Vice President of the Minnesota Association of Black Lawyers.
