Angharad Valdivia is a Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, affiliated with the Latina & Latino Studies department and the Institute of Communications Research. She is also an affiliate faculty member in the Women and Gender in a Global Perspective Program and the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS). Her research integrates gender studies, ethnic studies, and media studies to analyze contemporary mainstream popular culture within transnational frameworks.
Her work focuses on the interplay between agency and structure in Latinidad, with field research conducted in Nicaragua, Peru, and Chile. Key projects include hybridity theory in Latina/o Studies, strategic ambiguity in ethnic representation, and transnational disciplinary analysis. She has held visiting scholar positions at UC San Diego, Cambridge University, York University, and St. Louis University in Madrid.
