Angela Tod is Professor of Older People and Care in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Sheffield, with extensive academic, research, managerial and strategic experience spanning healthcare and university sectors. Her clinical background in nursing informs her research focus on evidencing nursing practice value and its societal impact. She jointly leads a 5-year Strategic Research Alliance between the Royal College of Nursing and School of Nursing and Midwifery, and serves as theme lead for the Translating Knowledge into Action Theme of the Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC) Yorkshire and Humber.
Professor Tod's research primarily centers on care for adults and older people, with particular emphasis on patient experience studies across public health, health inequalities, and healthcare access. Her substantial research portfolio includes work on lung cancer early diagnosis/treatment access, cold homes and health, intermediate care for older people, Parkinson's, neutropenic sepsis, and patient experiences of obesity. Methodologically, she specializes in qualitative research and mixed methods studies, with growing interest in military veterans with mesothelioma. Her teaching interests include research methods, health inequalities, patient experience, and cold homes and health.
Recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on mesothelioma care, nursing workforce issues, and older people's healthcare. Her work spans qualitative studies, systematic reviews, and mixed methods research addressing patient experiences, professional practice challenges, and healthcare system improvements. Significant themes include mental health impacts of mesothelioma, nursing associate professional development, and frailty assessment in older cancer patients, reflecting her commitment to improving care for vulnerable populations.
Professor Tod has a strong record of doctoral student supervision and has secured substantial research funding including the £1.45 million RCN Strategic Research Partnership (2017-2022), where she served as joint lead with Dr. Tony Ryan. Other significant grants include the 'Being Warm: Being Happy' study on fuel poverty for people with learning difficulties (£19,931 from EAGA Charitable Trust), and research on frailty assessment in older people with lung cancer (£77,475 from Weston Park Cancer Charity).
She maintains active professional engagement as Chair of the Research Interest Group of the National Lung Cancer Forum for Nurses, panel member for the NIHR Clinical Lectureship and Senior CL Scheme, and member of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer. Her editorial work includes serving on the board of the European Journal of Oncology Nursing, with additional peer review activities for numerous journals and grant awarding bodies including ESRC Review College and NIHR programs.
