Angela Thompsell is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at SUNY College at Brockport. She holds a PhD from the University of Michigan (2009) and dual bachelor’s degrees in History (summa cum laude) and Zoology (cum laude) from the University of Florida (2001).
Her research specializes in Modern Britain, the British Empire, and African History, with a focus on exploration and conquest during the Scramble for Africa. She has contributed to scholarly discourse through her review of Africa, Empire and Globalization: Essays in Honor of A. G. Hopkins (2011), analyzing economic and political forces in African and British imperial history.
Thompsell’s work engages with themes such as ‘gentlemanly capitalism,’ the crisis of adaptation in West Africa post-Atlantic slave trade abolition, and the intersection of globalization with imperial studies. Her courses include ‘World History, 1500-Present,’ ‘Modern Imperial Britain,’ and ‘Colonialism in the Congo.’
