About
Angela Russell is a Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Oxford, holding a joint appointment between the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Pharmacology. Her research focuses on discovering molecules to intervene in degenerative diseases, particularly through mechanisms targeting gene expression, inflammation, regenerative medicine, and cancer. She leads a research group at the Department of Chemistry and is affiliated with St John's College.
Dr. Russell earned her MChem from Oxford in 2000 and her DPhil in Organic Chemistry in 2004. She has co-founded two spin-out companies, MuOx Ltd (now part of Summit Therapeutics) and OxStem Ltd, and has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and patents. Her work includes developing ezutromid, a utrophin modulator tested in clinical trials for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and pioneering immunometabolic receptor research to combat chronic inflammation.
Her awards include the Harrington UK Rare Disease Scholarship (2021) and recognition as a BioBeat 50 Mover & Shaker (2016). Collaborations span institutions such as the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine and the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology. Her research emphasizes translating molecular discoveries into therapeutic applications for degenerative diseases.
