Angela Gist-Mackey

Angela Gist-Mackey is an Associate Professor of Organizational Communication at the University of Kansas, Department of Communication Studies, within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri. Her research focuses on organizational communication, social class, stigma, and power dynamics in institutional settings. She employs ethnographic and critical qualitative methods to explore issues like unemployment support systems, social mobility, and racial inequity in organizations. Notably, she won the National Communication Association’s Ethnography Division’s best article award in 2019 and 2020, and the 2021 Community Engaged Scholarship Award. She teaches courses on organizational culture, identity negotiation, and qualitative methodologies.

Dr. Gist-Mackey’s work bridges academia and community, partnering with organizations to address systemic challenges. Her research has been published in Organization Studies, Communication Monographs, and Management Communication Quarterly. She advocates for inclusive communication practices and challenges classed and racial biases in institutional contexts.
