Angel Rubio

Angel Rubio serves as Scientific Member and Director at the Max Planck Institute for Structure and Dynamics of Matter in Hamburg, Germany, while holding concurrent professorships at the University of Hamburg and the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) in Spain. He leads the Theory Department within the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL) and directs the Nano-bio Spectroscopy group at UPV/EHU.

His research spans Condensed Matter Physics, Quantum Mechanics, and Computational Materials Science, with pioneering work in Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT), Quantum Electrodynamics (QEDFT), and strong light-matter interactions. He founded the open-source octopus project used by 600+ research groups globally for simulating electron-nuclei dynamics under time-dependent fields.

Rubio's scientific contributions include over 300 publications with 28,000+ citations (H-index=82), 40 Highly Cited Papers, and editorial roles for foundational texts including Fundamentals of Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (Springer, 2012). His work drives advancements in nanomaterials, time-resolved spectroscopy, and quantum control theory.
