About
Andy Wan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of California, Merced. Prior to joining UC Merced, he worked at the University of Northern British Columbia (2018-2023) and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at McGill University (2014-2018) under Jean-Christophe Nave and Gantumur Tsogtgerel. He earned his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics at Polytechnique Montréal (2010-2014) under Marc Laforest and Frédéric Sirois, following undergraduate studies at the University of British Columbia and a Master’s degree under George Bluman.
Research interests:
- Numerical analysis
- Scientific computing
- Structure-preserving discretizations
- Bayesian inference
- Hamiltonian Monte Carlo
- Scientific machine learning
His work focuses on structure-preserving numerical methods, particularly conservative discretizations that maintain geometric invariants of dynamical systems, and their intersection with machine learning. He currently participates in the PIMS Collaborative Research Group (2024-2027) on Structure-Preserving Discretizations and their Applications.
