About
Professor Andy Ridgwell holds dual appointments as Professorial Research Fellow at the University of Bristol and Professor of Geology at the University of California, Riverside. He serves as an external Partner/Co-Investigator for the Leverhulme Centre for Climate Change Mitigation.
His research centers on Earth system science modeling, particularly through the cGENIE framework—a 3D ocean circulation-based model simulating climate-CO2 interactions and biogeochemical cycles across land, ocean, and marine sediments. He investigates geological weathering processes, marine plankton co-evolution, and ecological responses to climate perturbations spanning ancient glaciations to future fossil fuel emission impacts. His work integrates paleoclimatology, oceanography, and carbon cycle dynamics without laboratory components.
As a key contributor to Theme 1 (Earth System Science Modelling) at the Leverhulme Centre, he advances projects on weathering-driven climate regulation and plankton-environment feedbacks under historical and projected climate scenarios.
