About
Prof. Andy Mitchell is Professor in Microbial Geochemistry at Aberystwyth University's Department of Geography and Earth Sciences. He directs the Extreme Experimental Environments Laboratory and co-directs the Interdisciplinary Centre for Environmental Microbiology.
His research investigates microbe-mineral-sediment interactions in glacial environments and subsurface systems. Key areas include biogeochemical cycling in ice sheets, microbial survival mechanisms in extreme cold, and engineered applications for environmental remediation and carbon capture.
Recent projects include NERC-funded studies on supraglacial ecosystems (Cryo365) and subglacial lake microbiology in Antarctica. His work combines field studies with laboratory experimentation to understand microbial processes in climate-vulnerable environments.
Mitchell has secured significant research funding including NERC grants exceeding £1.2M and leads international collaborations on Arctic and Antarctic microbial ecology. He serves as Associate Editor for Frontiers in Geochemistry and supervises multiple PhD students researching microbial processes in extreme environments.
