Andy Fry is a Senior Lecturer in Music at King’s College London, based in the Department of Music within the Faculty of Arts & Humanities. He joined King’s in 2007 after teaching at the University of California, San Diego and serving as a visiting professor at Berkeley. His research focuses on jazz (particularly pre-1960, race, gender, and historiography), music in twentieth-century France, and musical theatre. He is the author of Paris Blues: African American Music in France, 1920–1960 (2014) and current projects include the revival of New Orleans jazz in mid-century contexts.
Education: D.Phil. in Music from the University of Oxford (2004), with additional studies at Lancaster University, UC Berkeley, and the University of Pennsylvania.
Research interests include jazz history, African-American music, music and race, and historiography. His work often bridges interdisciplinary approaches, examining cultural exchange and identity in French and American contexts. Notable publications span scholarly articles, book chapters, and reviews in journals like Cambridge Opera Journal and Music & Letters.
Awards include the Lewis Lockwood Award (2015) and the Franklin Research Grant (2014). He has supervised numerous PhD students on topics related to jazz studies and music history.
Fry teaches jazz history, music and race, and historiography at all academic levels. He coordinates BMus dissertations and has led graduate seminars in jazz studies. His research is supported by grants from the Leverhulme Trust and the British Academy, including projects on New Orleans jazz revival and musical politics in 1920s Italy.
