About
André Hoelz is the Mary and Charles Ferkel Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). He joined the Caltech faculty in November 2010.
Education:
- B.Sc. from Albert-Ludwigs University of Freiburg (1993)
- M.Sc. from Albert-Ludwigs University of Freiburg (1997)
- Ph.D. from Rockefeller University (2004)
Research Focus: Structure-function studies of the nuclear pore complex (NPC) and histone-modifying machinery using X-ray crystallography, biochemical, and in vivo approaches. The lab aims to elucidate the atomic structure of the NPC, a ~120 million Dalton assembly in eukaryotic cells, and explore its regulatory mechanisms.
Teaching: Instructor for courses in biochemistry, structural biology, and chemistry at Caltech, including:
- Ch 11. Biochemistry Laboratory
- BMB/Ch 230. Macromolecular Structure Determination with Modern X-ray Crystallography Methods
- BMB/Bi/Ch 174. Advanced Topics in Biochemistry and Biophysics
Scientific Awards:
- Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Grant
