André Dombrowski

André Dombrowski is the Frances Shapiro-Weitzenhoffer Associate Professor of 19th Century European Art in the Department of History of Art at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts and Sciences, where he joined the faculty in 2008. He holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Germanic Literatures and Languages and is a core faculty member of the Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies Program.

His research focuses on the arts and material cultures of France and Germany (and their empires) during the mid-to-late 19th century, with deep analysis of avant-garde movements like Impressionism (1860s-1880s). He employs interdisciplinary frameworks connecting art to technology, science, politics, sexuality, and psychology, examining artists including Cézanne, Manet, Monet, Degas, and von Menzel.

Current projects include Instants, Moments, Minutes: Monet and the Industrialization of Time (linking Impressionist temporality to time-keeping histories) and a study of Manet's 1860s paintings within Second Empire legal cultures. He is editing the Wiley Blackwell Companion to Impressionism (2019) and co-edited Is Paris Still the Capital of the Nineteenth Century? (Routledge, 2016).

His service includes chairing the Arthur Ross Gallery advisory committee and convening Penn's LGBTQA faculty diversity working group.
