About
Andrew Simmonds is a Professor and Chair in the Department of Cell Biology at the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, University of Alberta. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms regulating cell division, differentiation, and organelle function using Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism.
Research Interests: His work spans several interconnected areas: (1) the regulation of peroxisome and lipid droplet function in metabolism and disease; (2) cytoplasmic mRNA regulation through P-bodies and the GW182 homolog Gw; and (3) the role of Vestigial-like proteins in muscle cell fate determination via interactions with Scalloped and the Hippo pathway. These studies provide insights into human peroxisome disorders, metabolic diseases, and gene regulatory mechanisms.
The recent publications (2010–2017) highlight a strong focus on organelle biology, RNA regulation, and developmental genetics, with applications in modeling human diseases such as Zellweger spectrum disorders. His lab employs live-cell imaging, Drosophila genetics, molecular biology, and cell culture techniques.
Scientific Contributions:
- First identification and functional validation of the GW182 homolog (Gw) in Drosophila.
- Development of a Drosophila model for peroxisome biogenesis disorders.
- Elucidation of Vestigial-Scalloped interactions in muscle differentiation.
Advising and Research Leadership: He currently supervises graduate students and leads a research team investigating fundamental cellular processes. As Chair, he holds a significant administrative role in the department. His lab has secured research funding evidenced by sustained publication output in high-impact journals.
Laboratory and Team: The Simmonds lab is located in the Medical Sciences Building and includes graduate students and a technician, working on integrated projects in cell and developmental biology.
