About
Dr Andrew R. Thomson is an Associate Professor and NERC Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Earth Sciences, University College London. His research focuses on deep Earth processes, utilizing high-pressure-temperature experiments to investigate mantle mineral properties and volatile elements' roles in geodynamic processes. His work combines experimental techniques with synchrotron x-rays and neutron diffraction to analyze geological phenomena at extreme conditions.
Research interests include the study of natural diamonds and their inclusions to unravel subsurface processes, as well as determining material properties such as density, acoustic velocities, and rheology under mantle conditions. He is affiliated with research groups like Computational Mineral Physics and Deep Volatiles.
- Awards: NERC Senior Research Fellow
- Teaching: GEOL0007 - The Earth
Dr Thomson’s experimental approaches involve multi-anvil and diamond anvil cell devices, contributing to understanding the deep carbon cycle and mantle dynamics. His research bridges geochemical and geophysical perspectives to address fundamental questions about Earth’s interior.
